Does Rationality Give Us Reasons?

چکیده

Most of us take it for granted that we ought to be rational—to have the bundle of dispositions and abilities that constitute the faculty of rationality. Most of us also take it for granted that we ought to satisfy various individual requirements of rationality: we ought not to believe it is Monday and also believe it is not Monday; we ought to intend to catch the 12.50, if we intend to get to a meeting and believe catching the 12.50 is the only way to get there; and so on. There is a genuine question whether these things are so: ought we to be rational, and ought we to satisfy the individual requirements of rationality? In this paper, I shall suggest that the answer to the first question is plausibly ‘‘Yes’’, but I shall concentrate particularly on the second question. I shall explain that I have found no satisfactory grounds for answering ‘‘Yes’’ to it. For the moment, I doubt that, necessarily, we ought to satisfy each of the individual requirements of rationality. Indeed, I doubt that, necessarily, we have any reason to satisfy each of these requirements.

Game Theory, Logic and Rational Choice

Philosopher: What I would like to understand better is how game theory can help us to understand rational choice, and how this is related to logic. Philosophy has a long-standing interest in rational behavior. The hallmark of rationality is always taken to be the “good reasons for acting” that rational people can give. But game theory seems more concerned with what people actually do than in th...

تردید در وجود تلقی جهان‌شمول از عقلانیت در رویه‌های شهرسازی

There is a deep-seated belief among planners that the historical association between urban planning and rationality is an unquestioned presumption which they follow their daily practices based on. It seems that truth of urban planning claims has been shown predominantly by applying the concept of rationality. As a result, reflection on rationality can be taken into consideration as an importan...

Is rationality normative?

Rationality requires various things of you. For example, it requires you not to have contradictory beliefs, and to intend what you believe is a necessary means to an end that you intend. Suppose rationality requires you to F. Does this fact constitute a reason for you to F? Does it even follow from this fact that you have a reason to F? I examine these questions and reach a sceptical conclusion...

Free Irrationality in Moral Choices

This paper explores the question of whether an agent can freely and willfully act against her all-things-considered best judgment. I construct the case of an agent acting against the demands of impartial morality that give her decisive reason to act, without compromising her full agential power and strong will. I call this her demonstration of free irrationality and distinguish it from the acco...

Questing for Happiness: Augmenting Aristotle with Davidson?

Drawing heavily on Aristotle, Tabensky attempts to establish ‘an ethic that flows from the very structure of our being’, but he also calls on Davidson’s arguments about the essentially social character of rationality to shore up Aristotle’s claim that we are essentially social beings. This much of his project, I argue is successful. However Tabensky takes this a step further and proposes a plur...
